Belarus suggests establishing a free trade zone between the SES and ASEAN member states, Prime Minister of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich has said as he met with Chairman of the National Assembly of Cambodia's Parliament Heng Samrin on 21 June. “It would be good to conclude treaties to create a free trade zone between the SES and ASEAN. We are interested in and ready to consider mutual preferences,” the Premier said. Mikhail Myasnikovich emphasized that Belarus is an open economy and is building a democratic and law-based society. The country is interested in developing trade and economic relations with ASEAN and will be glad to discuss joint projects with Cambodia. “I believe that the Kingdom of Cambodia has a vast economic, human and intellectual potential. We could be useful for each other, complement each other in economic, innovative and investment fields. Numerous humanitarian projects and parliamentary contacts can contribute to that,” the Premier said. Belarus hopes that Cambodia is interested in the mutually beneficial cooperation with Belarus taking into consideration that Belarus is located right in the center of Europe and is member of the Single Economic Space (SES) with Russia and Kazakhstan. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the ongoing visit will open a new page in the history of the bilateral cooperation. In 2011, Belarus- Cambodia trade made up $2.17 million, with Belarusian export being $50,300. Belarus exported tires to Cambodia and imported rubber, rice, footwear and textiles. In January-April this year, there were no exports to Cambodia, while imports made up $125,500. Taking into consideration rapid expansion of agricultural production in Cambodia, Belarus might export tractors and potash fertilizers to this country. Belarus is also interested in academic and tourism cooperation with Cambodia. |
